In the 2022 General Elections in Kenya, County Governance Watch (CGW) played a pivotal role in promoting peaceful and transparent voting. This event, held on August 9, 2022, was a landmark in Kenya’s adherence to its 2010 Constitution, witnessing the election of key political positions across the nation.

CGW’s involvement included mobilizing various stakeholders and deploying 92 observers across Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties. These observers, leveraging the Tawaza Web Platform, a toll-free number, and WhatsApp, reported over 15,000 observations, ensuring oversight and accountability. Remarkably, the process was largely efficient and peaceful, with only a few security concerns.

The observers were strategically positioned in areas with a history of electoral violence. They monitored the timely opening of polling stations and the smooth flow of voting processes. Despite low voter turnout in some areas, the voting was mostly calm and peaceful.

A significant highlight was the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), although there were challenges with the KIEMS kit, causing delays in some polling stations. Despite these issues, voters showed patience, and the process continued steadily.

Overall, the 2022 General Elections in Kenya were a testament to the country’s commitment to democratic principles and the effective use of technology in enhancing electoral processes.
